Motivation

Who acts, is better prepared: a thought which currently motivates many actors to identify environmentally relevant areas within the company, and realize suitable improvement measures. Today, more than 5,5 % of the CO2 emissions worldwide are caused by logistics alone. Accordingly logistics can make a valuable contribution to achieve the climate protection goals of the Federal Government. Before emissions reduction measures and “Green Logistics” products as well as services can be derived and implemented, however, emissions of present logistics systems are to be uniformly determined and emission driving processes need to be identified.

Project Goal

The development and realization of eco-efficient logistics products and services – therefore real, both ecological and economic logistics solutions – follows as part of the collaborative project »Green Logistics«. The objective of this collaborative project is to determine the ecological impacts of logistics processes and systems, first-time source-specific and standardized for the whole logistics chain, so, integratively for the three areas logistics real estate, intralogistics and transport.
Methods and instruments to be (further) developed for this are transferred into a certification system for logistics service providers and an international standards committee is initiated. Besides, an exemplary assessment tool is realized, with which environmental impacts of logistics systems and processes can be determined and the most eco-efficient solutions identified.

Innovations

Eleven project partners conceptualize eco-efficient products and logistics systems. Among others, they realize a CO2 neutral airfreight hub, an eco-efficient last mile logistics as well as a resource-saving container management. Innovations of the collaborative project are the comparability of ecological impacts regarding logistic performance and evidence of the existence of eco-efficient solutions, against the background of the whole logistics chain. Together with the already today existing market pressure this will result in an innovation dynamism, which leads to more green products, technologies and services - also beyond the duration of funding.
